John Carter is based on a classic novel by Edgar Rice Burroughs, whose highly imaginative adventures served as inspiration for many filmmakers, both past and present. The film tells the story of war-weary, former military captain John Carter, who is inexplicably transported to Mars where he becomes reluctantly embroiled in a conflict of epic proportions amongst the inhabitants of the planet, including Tars Tarkas and the captivating Princess Dejah Thoris. In a world on the brink of collapse, Carter rediscovers his humanity when he realizes that the survival of Barsoom and its people rests in his hands.

Jack Sadelstein (Adam Sandler) is on top of his game, and has every reason to be thankful: he has a beautiful wife (Katie Holmes), great kids, a gorgeous house in L.A., and a successful job as an advertising executive. A suspenseful and gripping psychological thriller, Lynne Ramsay’s We Need to Talk About Kevin explores the factious relationship between a mother and her son. Tilda Swinton, in a bracing, tour-de-force performance, plays the mother, Eva, as she contends for 15 years with the increasing malevolence of her first-born child, Kevin (Ezra Miller). The Descendants won two Golden Globes - for Best Motion Picture (Drama), and George Clooney for Best Actor in a Motion Picture (Drama).

With Jonas Kaufmann in the title role, René Pape as the devil, and Angela Gheorghiu as Marguerite, Gounod’s classic retelling of the Faust legend couldn’t be better served. Tony Award-winning director Des McAnuff updates the story to the first half of the 20th century with a production that won praise in London last season. Michelle Williams (Blue Valentine) stars as film icon Marilyn Monroe in this drama based on her time making The Prince and the Showgirl, and the week she spent being escorted around Britain by a production assistant while her husband left the country.

The Prince and the Showgirl (1956) unites Sir Laurence Olivier (Kenneth Branagh) and Monroe, and also doubles as Monroe’s honeymoon with her new husband, playwright great Arthur Miller (Dougray Scott). Working on the movie is lowly assistant, 23-year-old Colin Clark (Eddie Redmayne), to whom Monroe takes a shine.

Michelle Williams won the Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Motion Picture (Comedy or Musical) for her role in My Week with Marilyn.
